Sasha Zhitneva | Symbiotic Drift
Sasha Zhitneva is a Pennsylvania-based, Russian-born artist whose background in applied mathematics, modeling, and design informs her sculptural practice. While studying mathematics in Moscow, she came to see its clarity and structural precision as an art form. These qualities later found resonance in glass, her primary medium since launching her career in New York.
Her work explores how people construct their narratives and then become part of them, placing the brief span of a human life against the weight of history, myth, and the accelerating present. Through hybrid sculptures that fuse hand-worked glass with clear plastic from discarded containers, Zhitneva examines fragility, persistence, and false compatibility. By entwining these materials, glass with its resilience and capacity for renewal, and plastic with its mimicry and endurance, she traces quiet connections across species, centuries, and non-breathing matter, revealing how stories and substances coexist within shared ecologies of time and touch.
